Day 8 ~ Whale Watch

Monday, September 14th

We had our morning coffee looking out over the water.

Then a lovely breakfast with the other guests ~ it was a full house.

We headed out right away to catch another ferry. This time taking us to Tiverton for our much anticipated whale watch.

Waiting in line ~

The ferry coming in ~

Entering ~

We arrived at Ocean Exploration in time to "gear up" for the ride.

There were eleven passengers on board ~

and Captain Tom at the helm. Only two women actually had a seat, the others simply rested on the inflated area and held onto the ropes.

It was a fast, bumpy ride for close to an hour before we spotted anything. Captain Tom was a little concerned at times and we were getting very concerned with the size of the waves. He said we wouldn't be able to stay out for long, however, when we got out far enough it calmed down.

We spotted a whale breaching and headed that way ~

There was a cow and her calf and another adult. The calf was just like other children, it played and played putting on a real show for us.

Diving up and down ~

Rolling over and over ~

When the whale goes under, the water displaced causes a slick spot to appear on the surface called a footprint.

We had so much activity, Captain Tom notified other boats of our find. Another raft approached but by then the whales were moving on.

Noticing the size of the swells ~ 6 - 8'

On the way back in we spotted three or four more whales so it was a very successful trip!

And this was only the morning! . . .
