We crawled out of bed early this morning to see the sun rise from the top of Cadillac Mountain. During the fall and winter months the first place the sun hits the US is Cadillac Mountain. As we continued our drive up the mountain the fog thickened and our only thought was "what are we doing?" When we reached the top it was pitch black and we could feel the fog. We were dressed in several layers including winter hats and gloves and continued to wonder what we were doing up here. We maneuvered our way through the fog and along the rocks picking our spot. With the thick cloud cover and no sign of the sun we thought it was a bust. Then all of a sudden we noticed a lighter spot in the sky ~ it was actually happening! The spot continued to grow ~
and then ~ there it was.
Thank goodness we saw it because it only lasted about five to ten minutes before the clouds covered it again.
It was well worth it ~ Beautiful!
The views continued to reward as we descended the mountain ~ the clouds breaking on the horizon.
One of the bridges of Acadia ~
We packed up our things and headed toward Canada. We crossed the border from Lubec, Maine over the Roosevelt International Bridge into New Brunswick and onto Campobello Island. We stopped at the Mulholland Point Lighthouse at high tide which is great feeding time for the seals. We saw at least a dozen.
Campobello Island was the summer home of the Roosevelts. FDR's parents bought a cottage there when he was a small boy. It soon became his favorite place. When he and Eleanor were married they brought their young family to Campobello as well. It is now an International Park ~ the only park of its kind~ located in Canada, honoring a US President, maintained by the Canadian and US governments and serviced by the Canadian government.
We toured the "cottage" containing nineteen bedrooms and six bathrooms. Most of the furnishings including the place settings and silver are original to the home.
Then we went to the Hubbard Cottage next door to have " Tea with Eleanor."
We liked this cottage even more. Mrs. Hubbard saw this oval window abroad and had to have one imported for her cottage.
From the inside it created the illusion of a picture frame ~ it was beautiful and what a view!
Our tea with Eleanor was wonderful. Twenty men and women sat at small tables having tea and cookies while two women told the interesting life story of this truly amazing woman. The locals loved Eleanor and were often invited to functions and sometimes helped her make food.
Later we drove out to the other end of the island to see the Head Harbor Lightstation. We were unable to see much because it is located on an island and it was high tide.
The walkway and stairs were covered with water.
When we first entered Campobello Island, the woman at the visitor center explained that there were two ferries we could take to St John, NB rather than drive back around so we opted for that.
It was a very small ferry ~
that took us to Deer Island.
We drove across Deer Island and picked up the larger government ferry (free)
which took us to St.George. This trip is becoming very interesting!
Across the Indian River/Bay of Fundy
It was beautiful ~
Green's Point Light and Interpretive Center
Another ferry coming back to Deer Island.
We continued to drive on to the St John Hampton Inn for the night.
