Thursday, September 17th,
We left Halifax after visiting the Fairview Cemetery that has a section dedicated to the victims of the Titanic.
It was very moving to see the plain markers, many with no names just a number.
Others with names added by family after identification had been made.
Looking down the row, there was noticeably one marker where the grass was worn away in front ~ it was the marker of the only small child that was found ~ a two year old boy.
After seeing the museum yesterday we were glad we stopped at the cemetery.

Day 10 ~ Halifax
Wednesday, September 16th,
Our hotel was located at the base of the Citadel so we headed there right away to beat the crowds. It was a beautiful sunny day so the views were wonderful.
The famous Clock Tower of Halifax. Obsessed with punctuality, the Commander-in-Chief of the British military made a parting gift to Halifax: a town clock on the hill overlooking Brunswick Street. ... The Old Town Clock, as it is now known, was installed in October 1803 and has watched over Halifax for more than 200years.

The Royal guards of the Citadel~

The Citadel compound ~

Reenactment of the time ~

The Old Town Clock overlooking the harbor.

John found a toy!

The barracks

We continued on to the harbor, Tim Hortons everywhere

and Theodore Tug Boat welcoming you to the harbor. He will take you on a harbor tour if interested. Unfortunately, Theodore was finished for the season.

The busy Boardwalk ~

The we went to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic ~

We found it very interesting .

Learning that Halifax was the first responder to the Titanic disaster was very interesting and moving. The systems used to recover and record the dead (numbering victims and possessions) were innovative for the time and are still used today for similar disasters.

Continuing along the pier we had to try the famous Cows ice cream we had read so much about. The ice cream was delicious but just as famous are their t-shirts. Sporting spoofs on many socially current tv shows, movies etc, they are very funny and very popular.

Enjoying this gorgeous day we continued along the pier ~

and stopped for a cool one at ~

We ended up with a sampler ~ (Lynn had one, John four)

We decided to go back to the hotel for a while before dinner ~ bad decision. We liked the fact that the hotel was at the base of the Citadel and enjoyed walking downhill to the harbor however when it was time to return ~ it was all uphill ~ a steep hill. Oh well, good exercise.
We ventured back to the harbor for dinner and upon recommendation from people we met we tried the Gahan House.

GREAT burger!

Beautiful view ~

Day 9 ~ Lighthouse Route
Tuesday, September 15th
We left Digby in the morning taking the lighthouse route to Halifax. This route took us along the coast of Nova Scotia through several small quaint fishing villages.
First was Liverpool where we visited Fort Point Lighthouse Park ~
We were able to watch a video interview of the man who lived in the lighthouse as a child and then view the different rooms. Climbing to the top gave us a great view of the harbor.
The hydrants painted as loyalists ~
Liverpool is still a very active port ~
It was a beautiful day ~ passing through Beach Meadows
Lighthouses and churches all along the way ~
Next, Medway ~
Continuing along ~
Crescent Beach, LaHave
We knew as we entered Luenburg that it was a larger, busier port.
It was vibrant and active ~
What a gorgeous day and the harbor was so picturesque ~
Of course John had to play with the bell ~ you don't realize how huge these things are when you see them out in the water.
We continued on to Mahone Bay ~
And Chester ~
When we left our B&B this morning the proprietor's daughter told us her favorite town was Chester with a great little cafe, the Kiwicafe. We waited all day for this with great anticipation. By now it was 4:45 and we were starving! We walked in and were asked if we wanted coffee. We replied with a quick yes and what can we get with it? Oh, our kitchen closed at 4:30! (You can't be serious!) She recommended a place across the street which actually turned out great. John was able to renew his faith in lobster rolls!
The harbor was beautiful ~
It was getting late and we wanted to make sure we got to Peggy's Cove before dark so we left the Lighthouse Route and continued on the highway. We arrived at the famous Peggy's Cove about 6:30 in the evening and it was beautiful. The sun was lower in the sky so it was at a perfect angle.
Beautiful rocky coastline ~
The sky was so blue and the clouds just right
It was high tide and the waves were crashing onto the rocks.
The small harbor was very picturesque ~
We met people who had been at Peggy's Cove earlier in the day and they complained that there were several busses there. They couldn't even get out onto the rocks. We were thankful that we arrived later ~ although completely unplanned.
We had a few minutes before the sun set so we stopped at the Swissair Flight 111 Memorial ~
September 2,1998, flight 111 from JFK to Geneva, Switzerland crashed into the Atlantic 5 miles from shore. All 224 on board were killed. The people of this area felt their homes shake that day. Local fishermen were the first responders and villagers opened their homes to victims' families.
The sun was setting so we sat a few moments to enjoy.
After this long day, we still needed to get to Halifax. We finally arrived at the Hampton Inn about 9:30.
